The Best of Pet Shop Boys - feine britische Elektropop-Musik, 24. Oktober 2007

Mit den Pet Shop Boys bin ich groß geworden und habe 7 Alben von Ihnen. Auf diesem sind eigentlich die schönsten und größten Erfolge Ihrer populärsten Zeit verewigt. Daher durfte diese Scheibe in meiner Sammlung nicht fehlen. Die meisten dürften die beiden Musiker Neil Tannent und Chris Lowe durch die Coversion von 'Go West' oder den etwas aktuelleren Hit von Robbie Williams 'She is Madonna' kennen, wo sie eher als Backgroundsänger agierten. Das markante an dem Duo ist, dass nur Neil singt und Chris den Keyboardspieler miemt. Als Duo geben sie auf Bühnen optisch nicht viel her, aber ihre Musik ist einmalig. In den 80 er und 90 er waren ihre Stücke schneller und spritziger als heute. Da kamen die großen Hits heraus wie "West End Girl" (gefällt mir eigentlich gar nicht, war aber ihr Durchbruchslied), "Suburbia" (einfach Spitze!), It's a sin, Always on my mind (tanzbare Coverversion von einem Elvis Presley Hit), Heart, So hard, Beeing boring, Can you forgive her, Go West, Paninaro (ursprünglich ein B-Seiten Lied einer Single, aber A-Seiten tauglich!) und noch so einige andere. Auch die neueren Lieder sind teilweise sehr schön, aber eher etwas seichter.Fazit: Wer noch kein Album von den Pet Shop Boys im CD-Regal hat, ist hiermit gut bedient. Diese CD umfasst die besten und schönsten Werke des Elektropop-Duos.

Es gibt nur ganz wenig Scheiben, die man getrost empfehlen kann, von denen man sagen kann: jeder Titel ist ein Hit - hier ist solch eine CD!Beste Pop-Musik in Reinkultur, technisch auf höchstem Stand ausgefeilt, Ohrwürmer, die Sie nicht mehr aus dem Kopf kriegen (oder aus dem Tanzbein :-)) Kaufen! Oder besser: mehrere kaufen und verschenken - diese Doppel-CD wird jeder mögen!

Despite being advertised as an 'international version', this is in fact the same configuration as the North American release of the PopArt. There are several versions of this with minor variations, so be advised to check the listings carefully for the song-selections and tracks.

The first of the discs of this 'Greatest Hits' for the Pet Shop Boys contains 17 tracks (Pop), and the second 18 tracks (Art). For those who are die-hard fans of the Pet Shop Boys, this is a must have, but, for the most part, those fans will find it is in many ways an already-have. The tracks are remastered, but given the high production qualities of most PSB discs generally, there isn't a great deal to be gained from this. There are two new songs, Miracles and Flamboyant (one on each disc), which are both wonderful (and, interestingly, the addition of two songs to the 'greatest hits' compilation matches their performance with Discography, which also had a 'best of' with two new tracks added).

There are the major songs and single releases from all previous albums, so this serves both as a retrospective but also as a handy all-in-one collection spanning the history of the Pet Shop Boys; from that perspective, if you were to have just one CD from them, this would the one. The songs are not in chronological release order (as Discography was), but rather seem almost randomly arranged; all songs but one from Discography are here, with an additional collection of tracks from the later album releases that reached the UK top 20. The division between 'Pop' and 'Art' is subtle, and any lifelong fan will have his or her own impressions as to which songs should fit into which category. The 'Pop' side is more disco/dance music, whereas the 'Art' side is a little more sombre, and the lyrics a little more complex. On the other hand, some songs, such as 'Love comes quickly' would easily qualify for either designation.

This collection represents more than 20 years work on the part of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. For the first several years of that career, they were famous world-wide, and quite a staple in the dance clubs and video programming in America and elsewhere. The first singles collection 'Discography' represented the beginning of the decline of 80s style dance music in America, but the music descended from this type remained strongly popular throughout the rest of the world, as the sold-out concert tours of the Pet Shop Boys everywhere except North America attests to. Many of the songs on this 'Pop-Art' collection will therefore be new to audiences whose interest in the Pet Shop Boys ended the hits from the 'Behaviour' era.

A must-have for anyone who likes dance music, disco, electronic music, 80s music, the Pet Shop Boys, or who wants to have a complete music collection.

       Eine umfassende "Best of" der besten Pop-Band der Welt, 19. August 2005

Wer noch nicht alle Pet Shop Boys-CDs hat und auch darauf verzichtet hat, sich die genialen neueren Stücke "Miracles" und "Flamboyant" als Maxi-CDs zuzulegen, der sollte hier zugreifen. Die beiden neuen Stücke sind herausragend, insbesondere "Miracles" zählt für mich zum besten, was die Pet Shop Boys je veröffentlicht haben. Die Maxi-CD lief bei mir wochenlang ständig.

Bei den älteren Stücken sind besonders "A red letter day" und "Somewhere" hervorzuheben, weil beide Mega-Hitqualitäten haben. Beide sind auf dem unterschätzten und - nach PSB-Maßstäben - gefloppten Album "Bilingual" enthalten. "Somewhere" ist übrigens ein Musical-Stück und wurde auch schon von Barbra Streisand gesungen. Die Boys haben dem Stück das Maß an Glamour gegeben, das es braucht."Always on my mind" ist übrigens ansonsten nur noch auf der alten "Best of" von 1991, "Discography", enthalten.

Was soll man noch groß sagen? 35 Hits von der besten Pop-Band der Welt auf zwei CDs verteilt - selbst für den, dem nur "Miracles" und "Flamboyant" fehlen lohnt sich der Kauf.

20 Jahre sind vergangen, seit die Pet Shop Boys mit "West End Girls" die Bühne der Musikwelt betraten.Kaum eine andere Band hat es seit 1985 geschafft, sich so kontinuierlich in den Charts zu behaupten und immer wieder für einen neuen Ohrwurm zu sorgen.Ich bin mit Neil Tennant und Chris Lowe groß geworden und habe mich sehr gefreut, dass nach "Discography" von 1991, nun eine neue Compilation mit allen Singles vorliegt.Die Pet Shop Boys waren immer eine Single-Band, was ja für manch andere Künstler nicht gilt. Darum macht hier der Kauf einer "Best of" absolut Sinn.Was soll ich Hits aufzählen, die jeder kennt. Von "Surburbia", über "It's a Sin", "Always on my Mind", "Heart", "Go West" bis hin zu "Red Letter Day" ist hier alles drauf - garantiert gute Tanzmusik, auf der sich bei der nächsten Party mit Sicherheit die meisten einigen können.Ärgerlich ist allerdings das die bekannteren Single-Versionen von "Surburbia" und "Heart" fehlen und statt dessen die Album-Tacks verwendet wurden.Trotzdem gilt: Diese Kopplung gehört in jedes Regal.
