Ich habe versucht (und die Betonung liegt auf VERSUCHT), mit diesem Buch, was ja von allen Professoren empfohlen wird, meine Magisterarbeit in Amerikanistik zu schreiben. Ich weiß nicht, ob die MLA-Leute noch im Schreibmaschinenzeitalter feststecken; zunächst mal sind alle Titel selbstständiger Publikationen immer unterstrichen, obwohl diese inzwischen immer kursiv gestellt werden. Außerdem gibt es kaum mal Kapitel zu kniffligen Sachen, denn alles andere kann man sich nach einem kleinen Einführungskurs an der Uni oder einer Google-Session über MLA-Style eh denken: Was ist mit der Quellenangabe von AUSZÜGEN aus Artikeln in Critical Editions? Müssen Aufsätze in Critical Editions beim Zitieren und in der Quellenangabe als Artikel behandelt werden? Wenn ich eine Quelle im Folgenden nach einem Zitat abkürze, wie schreibe ich das korrekt in die Fußnote? etc. etc. Es gibt ein halbes Dutzend Fragen, die nirgendwo auch nur angesprochen werden, wobei ich mir nicht denken kann, dass ich die Einzige bin, die sich diese Fragen stellt. Selbst kleine Sachen wie "wo beginnt die Seitennummerierung?" gibt es nicht, da das Handbuch wohl eher auf kleinere Essays oder Hausarbeiten ausgelegt ist. Selbst der Index ist unübersichtlich. Ich bin alles andere als zufrieden damit, und wenn ich könnte, würde ich 0 Sterne geben.

The MLA (Modern Language Association) style is my preferred style for writing papers - both in terms of citation and in terms of overall format. While I must confess to making small changes (based on my British English background and preference), I still adhere to most of the MLA standards when it comes to putting together research papers.

This is a guide that is useful not only for writing, but also for researching. There is a section that discusses researching both in a library and online. The guide then gives a refresher course in grammar, spelling, sentence and paragraph construction, and other elements of style that are useful in the general academic paper.

By far the most useful part of this guide is the section that shows how to reference in footnotes, endnotes, in-line/in-text citations and proper documentation of sources. While there are few elements due to new media (how does one reference a video on MPG format that doesn't actually reside on a website?) that might not be covered, this guide is fairly comprehensive when it comes to in-print, internet, and other media resources.

For undergraduate students, graduate students, academic writers and general writers, the MLA style is easy to follow, fairly intuitive in approach, and comprehensible even by those not training in such styles.

Ich studiere im Rahmen meines Lehramtstudiums Englisch und musste auch schon einige Hausarbeiten zur englischen Literatur schreiben. Ohne das MLA Handbook hätte ich die ein oder andere sichlerich noch mal überarbeiten dürfen. Es ist auf jeden Fall ein hilfreiches Buch, vor allem für diejenigen, die sich mit den verschiedenen Zitierreglen schwer tun (so wie ich :)). Meiner Ansicht nach ein absolutes "MUST HAVE!"

      Great Reference Work but Sometimes Boring, 14. Mai 2005

This book answers almost every question on how to write a paper or essay. Topics cover how to do research, what to pay attention to while writing and how to manage bibliography resources and lots of other stuff.
One point to mention yet is: The book contains quite some information I already knew. The structure allows you to skip this, though. And for the price (which is cheap for books in Academia) it is still worth buying. Or did you know which rules English title capitalization follows...?
