Beschreibung

"If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy." Such is the reigning philosophy at Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention facility where there is no lake, and there are no happy campers. In place of what used to be "the largest lake in Texas" is now a dry, flat, sunburned wasteland, pocked with countless identical holes dug by boys improving their character. Stanley Yelnats, of palindromic name and ill-fated pedigree, has landed at Camp Green Lake because it seemed a better option than jail. No matter that his conviction was all a case of mistaken identity, the Yelnats family has become accustomed to a long history of bad luck, thanks to their "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!" Despite his innocence, Stanley is quickly enmeshed in the Camp Green Lake routine: rising before dawn to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet in diameter; learning how to get along with the Lord of the Flies-styled pack of boys in Group D; and fearing the warden, who paints her fingernails with rattlesnake venom. But when Stanley realizes that the boys may not just be digging to build character--that in fact the warden is seeking something specific--the plot gets as thick as the irony.

It's a strange story, but strangely compelling and lovely too. Louis Sachar uses poker-faced understatement to create a bizarre but believable landscape--a place where Major Major Major Major of Catch-22 would feel right at home. But while there is humor and absurdity here, there is also a deep understanding of friendship and a searing compassion for society's underdogs. As Stanley unknowingly begins to fulfill his destiny--the dual plots coming together to reveal that fate has big plans in store--we can't help but cheer for the good guys, and all the Yelnats everywhere. (Ages 10 and older) --Brangien Davis

I had to read this story for my 10th grade english class in germany, and i must say i really didn't like it very much. As with many other school books the problem is that the grammar and vocabulary is just at the right level (a bit too easy for me because i'm a native speaker) but the content is way too easy and not interesting to 15-year-olds. However, i'm sure that if i was younger (9-13) i would enjoy it a lot more, since it is a cute story and the topic is unique. Hence three stars...

produkt bewertung produkt bewertung produkt bewertung produkt bewertung produkt bewertung  quite confusing but..., 20. November 2007

I've just read the book und all I can say that it really impressed me

in this book there are two stories which is at the beginning quite confusing because there seem to be no relation between those two stories but al last after reading it you'll understand and see

the story itself tells you about a boy
he has got to go to a camp called 'green lake" because he's accused of having stolen a very valuable pair of shoes
there his character should be improved in order to not steal anything anymore, to get a good boy by digging holes
but he begins to realize he isn't only digging holes to improve his behaviour but that the guys and him are searching for something but don't know what it is
there are many interruptions which bring up the other side of the book the other story tells you about a woman and her forbidden love and its consequences
finally these two stories merge into one and the reader understands all the things said in the book

in my opinion it is good to read for english beginners as it is not that hard to understand and even my advice is read it in english ( I began it in German once it was pretty boring)so it doesn't lose its peotic side
It's a book to read through and get excited about the things which happen there are many surreal things

I can only recommend reading it to you and you'll find out what a no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather means to your life.

Holes is a story, within a story, within a story, within a story.Sachar's style makes you think of many ideas and wonders. He wrote all different stories which had holes for you to fill and find out for yourself. His style made me stay focused in the book because you are dealing with all these thoughts and ideas that you would never know what would happen next. But in the book there are good points and there are bad points. The good points are when the book gets really exciting and your just have to know what happens next. The bad points are like at the end when he keeps you hanging and you want to know what happend to everybody else which kind of surprised me.He just wants you to fill in holes yourself.Overall, Sachar's style is my style because it's not those kind of books that stick to the same boring subject, it is the kind of wonders that all come together in the end when you finished filling your hole. If you missed reading Tino Georgiou's masterful novel--The Fates, I'd highly recommend reading it. Truly an enjoyable read.

Hallo zusammen!

I read this book as a German English Student in the 11th class. The reading of the book was very simple. The speech of the book is very clear and the verbal notes at the bottom of nearly every page helped me to understand the story.
But this story did not fascinate me. In my opinion it is calculable, you know what will happen in most situation. The characters in the book are too linear.
Beside that the content of the book did not interest me, because the story takes place in a Boot Camp scenery, which is very far away for a German student.
All in all I think this book is good for German English education, but it should be read in the 10th class. Private I would not read it.
