Much different in tone than Lord of the Rings..., 5. Juni 2008

I don't really know what I was expecting from the Hobbit but after having watched Lord of the Rings, coming to the Hobbit and reading it was a bit of a letdown. Maybe it was the fact that the book is a lot shorter than LOTR. Maybe it was the fact that the book has a different tone than LOTR in that the Hobbit has a much lighter and funnier tone with lots of songs and hilarity in it. The dwarves reminded me a lot of the dwarves in Snow White!!! But this is the back story to how Bilbo Baggins got the Magic Ring that leads up to Lord of the Rings, how Gollum comes into the whole picture and so on, so the story IS good, but it is radically different to LOTR and I wasn't expecting that.Bilbo is approached by Gandalf and the dwarves under Thorin Oakenshield and asked to accompany them on an adventure to vanquish Smaug the dragon who has destroyed the dwarf town of Dale and captured a vast amount of dwarf gold inside the nearby mountain. A reluctant Bilbo agrees and soon they are off on adventures he never dreamed of, meeting creatures such as goblins, wolves, eagles, double-crossing humans, elves and many more - including Gollum with a magic ring called "My Precious".....

       Vorzügliche Geschichte, 18. Januar 2008

Nachdem ich jahrelang die wichtigsten Tolkien Werke bereits zig-mal in der deutschen Fassung gelesen habe, wagte ich mich ans Original heran.Bewaffnet mit einem dicken Wörterbuch hatte ich keinerlei Mühe, der Geschichte von Bilbos Abenteuern zu folgen und selbst die archaische Schreibweise des Originals kommt prima rüber und stellt kein Problem dar.Nach einer Weile erübrigt sich auch das Wörterbuch.Mitunter habe ich Passagen zum Vergleich zuerst in der deutschen und dann in der Originalversion gelesen oder umgekehrt. Nachher habe ich die Geschichte als noch deutlich intensiver "erlesen" empfunden.Zur Geschichte selber muss man nichts mehr hinzufügen. Alles wesentliche wurde bereits gesagt/geschrieben.

Harry Potter is definitely great, but 'The Hobbit' - RULEZ !It's such a fantastic book, you will NEVER forget it ! If you are still trying to make up your mind if you want to read it, make your decision now ! The Hobbit ! :-)

       Englisch noch besser als Deutsch!, 29. Juni 2007

Nein, The Hobbit ist wahrlich nicht das Kinderbuch, als welches es gelegentlich deklariert. Der Schreibstil unterscheidet sich schon ein wenig vom Herrn der Ringe, wenn der Erzähler den Leser direkt anspricht, beispielsweise schreibt if you want to know what cram is... oder ähnliches, mutet es etwas kindisch an, aber wenn an anderen Stellen unverblümt Goblinköpfe abgeschlagen werden, vergeht das vermeintlich Kindische sehr offensichtlich.Die Handlung ist mehr oder weniger bekannt, denke ich deshalb gehe ich nicht darauf ein.Nachdem ich das Buch etwa fünf mal auf Deutsch gelesen habe, drängte es mich, es im Originaltext auszuprobieren. Ich kann nur sagen, man wird nicht enttäuscht und kann nur jedem empfehlen, es auf Englisch zu lesen! Die Sprache ist sehr verständlich, vor allem wenn man es bereits auf Deutsch kennt und sich deshalb eventuell unbekannte Worte durch die Situation von selbst erklären. Insgesamt hat es mir sogar noch viel besser gefallen auf Englisch! Ich bin sicher, auch englische Laien werden ihren Spaß damit haben, es ohne größere Schwierigkeiten verstehen und genießen können.Die Lieder und Gedichte sagten mir besonders zu und entzückten mich, so klang- und stimmungsvoll!Far over the misty mountains coldTo dungeons deep and caverns oldWe must away, ere break of dayTo find our long-forgotten gold.Einfach herrlich!!Tolkien- und Mittelerdebegeisterte sollten es auf jeden Fall mal im Original lesen, und sich von seinem erzählerischen Genie noch mehr beeindrucken zu lassen.
