Comment on A long way down by Nick HornbyOne bad point about the book is that the story intention and action at the end. Only the beginning is really exciting. I liked the idea of the four meeting at the roof of the toppers house and that they decide not to jump. The middle-part is good and the end is not very creative and rousing. Some parts are just needless, like the vacation and the idea of the angel. It seemed to me that Hornby just wanted to write anything to fill up his story. It's just predictable. After some time of reading you know what the problems of the persons are but Hornby decided to repeat them all the time. Martin complains all the time about his family and Jess about her sister and her parents. No now ideas or perspectives.I liked the fact that the plot is told by the four characters. Its a character-guided book and not told like all the other books in the world. The characters are giving the arguments for their actions and not the omniscient narrator. Its very varied because of the fact that everyone of the four is narrating the story from his/her point of view. You can look inside the characters and characterize them by your own.I also liked the fact that of different subjects, which are fitting the persons exactly. Hornby played around with this idea and created four very original and personal characters. Another point is the humour. Its hard to write a funny book about a serious theme like suicide. But Hornby managed it very well and even when you are not native speaker you can understand the jokes and get a good feeling for the persons, their character and the different language they use.All in all I liked the book. It was interesting, varied and funny. All facts a good book need to own.

Nachdem ich kürzlich erst "How to be good" von Hornby gelesen habe und von seinen anderen Büchern in der Vergangenheit ganz begeister war habe ich mich nun auf dieses gestürzt, aber leider ist es bei weitem nicht so gut wie ich es erwartet hatte. Im Vergleich zu "How to be good" wirken die 4 Figuren auf mich sehr blass, sie gewinnen erst in der 2. Hälfte des Romans etwas mehr an Kontur. Die Dialoge bestehen fast nur aus Flüchen und gegenseitiger Ignoranz. Immer wieder kommen die Hauptpersonen zu Wort und beschreiben die Geschehnisse aus ihrer Perspektive, aber wenns nicht drüberstünde könnte ich nicht auseinanderhalten, wer gerade spricht. Zu oberflächlich gezeichnet wirken die Figuren und der Plot hätte gut noch die ein oder andere Überarbeitung vertragen können. Ich hoffe Hornbys nächste Bücher werden wieder besser, sonst les ich lieber die alten nochmal!

Martin, Jess, JJ und Maureen begegnen sich zufällig am Silvesterabend auf dem Dach eines Londoner Hochhauses. Sie alle wollen ihrem Leben ein Ende setzen. Doch paradoxerweise führt ihre Begegnung dazu, dass sie genau dies nicht tun. Nein, sie sind nicht von einem Augenblick zum nächsten von ihrem Ansinnen "geheilt"; nein, sie werden nicht die besten Freunde, die füreinander durch dick und dünn gehen ... zumindest nicht sofort.Nick Hornbys Wege sind verschlungener. Auch in diesem Buch gelingt es ihm, ganz gewöhnliche Menschen in ihrer Besonderheit darzustellen. Martin, Jess, JJ und Maureen - sie alle haben ihr Päckel zu tragen, sie alle haben ihre Stärken und Schwächen. Und wie in "About a Boy" ist es gerade die Begegnung ganz unterschiedlicher Menschen, die das Besondere dieses Buches ausmacht: Ohne dass sie es merken, entsteht eine zwar ungewöhnliche, aber dennoch intensive Freundschaft zwischen den vier Protagonisten.Und in einem Roman über vier suizidale Menschen trotzdem unheimlich humorvoll zu schreiben (ohne die Ernsthaftigkeit des Themas zu vernachlässigen), spricht für Hornbys großes erzählerisches Talent. Ein sehr empfehlenswertes und unterhaltsames Buch.

It's about four persons who meet on New Years Evening on a tall building in London in order to commit suicide. Polite - like British people are - they introduce themselves to each other. As a result, the plan of jumping from the roof is no longer feasible... This is a book about human vulnerability that shows how fragil the ideas of a life worth living or a misery worth dying are. Being a Hornby book it is a laugh, too. Oh, and if you missed Tino Georgiou's--The Fates--I strongly recommend reading it.

eigentlich habe ich nicht viel zu sagen, außer dass es ein tolles und sehr lesenswertes buch ist!!! ich bin zwar noch nicht ganz durch aber ich bin ganz gefesselt und kann kaum aufhören zu lesen =)wirklich empfehlenswert, wenn man gern über eine derartige problematik (siehe auch "veronika beschließt zu sterben") liest.
