Bücher dieser Art haben es schwer: die Welt der Nachschlagewerke stirbt in Zeichen des Internet aus, besonders in diesem so schnell sich wandelnden Feld, wo 5 Jahre schon den Weg ins Antiquariat bedeuten und es neben der aktuellen Forschung fast nur Review- Artikel als Zusammenschau gibt. Für ein Lehrbuch ist dies Buch mit 1250 Seiten fast zu umfangreich, was man auch an dem (notwendigerweise) doch sehr dünnen Papier erkennt, wobei die Farb- Abbildungen sehr gut sind. Das Werk von Kandel ist freilich noch umfangreicher und auch älter. Deshalb habe ich mir als "Nachfolger des Kandel" das Buch von Squire zugekegt.Natürlich ist es nicht "easy to read", es ist kein Sachbuch und keine Strandlektüre. Squire (et all.) versucht, das gegenwärtig gesicherte Wissen so aktuell und auf grundlegende Prinzipien bezogen wie möglich darzustellen, das Buch stellt den theoretischen Hintergrund recht gut didaktisch aufgearbeitet bereit, um aktuelle Entwicklungen verfolgen zu können.

This book is one of the best in terms of the treatment of the certain aspects of neuroscience such as autonomic control, food intake, respiration and other aspects, though not so good for vision and other aspects,

The kandel provides literally vague and confusing information on the autonomic nervous system, the chapters in this book in comparison are crystal clear and beautifully explained, besides the people who have written these chapters are the leaders in their field, the latest information is presented and is definitely worth buying, The old edition is not so good and the second edition is hundred times better.

in summary it will be a nice addition to your bookshelf, more importantly the text is not sometimes as misleading as the kandel which doesnt consider all theories

      The book covers a lot but it is hard to study with it, 25. Januar 2001

Compared to the Kandel this book presents a lot of further information, especially when it deals with molecular and cellular foundations. But if one really wants to study the book in order to prepare for examinations it is heavily too detailed and sometimes very abstract because of too less pictures. That is why I recommend to every student the Kandel.

This first edition is terrible, with plenty of typos. Material is not presented clearly at all. Maybe a future edition will show some improvement, but as of now, I'd recommend Kandel et al, 4th edition.

Terrible textbook. The only goodness is that it mentions lots of details not helpful for understanding. The concepts are very messy and not clear at all. It could not be a bad reference book. For a textbook, forget about it!
